On January 8 of this year, Maine got some great national coverage on a great story. USA Today devoted nearly an entire page to a story revealing that Frommer’s Travel Guide had chosen Portland as one of its top12 tourist destinations…in the world!

How times have changed. How Maine is changing. The realities we have known for a lifetime are shifting under our feet, both for good and for ill. And there is a chance we may be starting to come to grips with the realities of the cascade of changes flooding around us.

I believe this is an exciting, and challenging, time to be in the economic development business in Maine, and that now is a time when opportunities for transformation and new directions in policy really can make a difference.
